As of today, July 17, red flags have been hung on all beaches in Kyiv. This means that citizens are forbidden to swim on the beaches of the capital.
Kyiv. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – July 17, 2021 – Ukraine Society and Culture
This was reported by the Pleso utility company, subordinated to the Kyiv City State Administration’s executive body for the protection, maintenance, and operation of the Kyiv Water Fund.
This decision was made for preventive purposes, because in conditions of prolonged abnormal heat in the water actively reproduces blue-green algae, which consume oxygen from the water and emit toxic substances.
As a result, the level of dissolved oxygen in the water decreases, which is a prerequisite for the death of fish. In such conditions, the sanitary quality of water deteriorates significantly.
For this reason, swimming is currently prohibited on all 14 beaches in Kyiv. At the same time on the shore, you can still relax or sunbathe.
Pleso urges Ukrainians to report the discovery of mass killings of fish in Kyiv’s water bodies so that the utility can take prompt action.
