Estonian Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Limetz said her country would not send a new ambassador to Belarus.
Kyiv. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – July 18, 2021 – Diplomatic Affairs
Limets believes that this would be inappropriate, as Estonia does not regard Alexander Lukashenko as a legitimate president, writes ERR.
In early July, President Kersti Kaljulaid appointed Jaak Lensment as his new ambassador to Belarus, who is to present credentials to Lukashenko. However, according to Liimetz, Estonia will not send an ambassador.
“It would be extremely inappropriate, because Estonia, like Europe, does not recognize the results of the presidential election in Belarus, which took place in August last year,” the minister said.
Limets believe that Estonia has several options: act, as usual, reduce Estonia’s representation, appoint a temporary charge d’affaires, do not hand over credentials, and leave the ambassador to work in Tallinn, do not take any further steps, and continue working with the reduced embassy staff.
“Our ambassador’s appointment in early September depends on our assessment of the situation in Belarus. We will consult with our partners and allies, who see the need to coordinate national action and show unity on this issue. The foreign policy consists of thousands of important details, “said Limets.
