According to the investigation, Atambayev “conspired” with former presidential candidate and former Prime Minister Omurbek Babanov and others “to seize power.”
The prosecution is convinced that the actions of the former head of state caused mass riots with the use of firearms. The politician’s lawyer claims that he only held a rally demanding to return the country “to the legal channel.”
Atambayev’s defense seeks to lift Zheenbekov’s immunity
The defense is also seeking the lifting of the immunity of former President Sooronbay Jeenbekov for questioning.
In October 2020, protests began in Kyrgyzstan after the announcement of the preliminary results of the parliamentary elections. Protesters stormed the parliament building. Atambayev’s supporters released him from the colony.
The politician and his associates came to a rally in the center of Bishkek on October 9, 2020, but supporters of opposition politician Sadyrov Zhaparov did not allow the action to take place.
The former head of Kyrgyzstan was transferred to a hospital-type colony
The next day, October 10, 2020, Atambayev was detained as part of a case of organizing mass riots and placed in a pre-trial detention center of the State Committee for National Security.
