The Pentagon said both conventional fighter jets and armed drones were used but did not provide details. However, the US official noted some features and said that since July 20, there has been a significant increase in the number of strikes.
U.S. officials said the planes were taking off from bases outside Afghanistan as the U.S. military withdrew its fighter jets from the country. The airstrikes were largely the direct support of Afghan forces attacked by the Taliban.
Airstrikes have been launched in a number of regions of the country, but the focus is on Kandahar, a provincial center that officials say could be targeted by the Taliban.
The Taliban now controls more than 200 of the 419 district centers and has made progress in cutting off some supply routes. But although they are putting pressure on half of the 34 provincial capitals, they have not yet taken control of any.
The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (AFSF) have killed 187 Taliban militants in the past 24 hours and wounded 112 more.
On April 14, US President Joe Biden announced his decision to end the operation in Afghanistan, which became the longest foreign military campaign in American history.
In early July, the Taliban took control of areas of Afghanistan along its borders with five countries: Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, China, and Pakistan, amid the withdrawal of Western coalition troops. According to the new commander of the Afghan Armed Forces, General Wali Mohammad Ahmadzai, the priority for the army is to protect the country’s main cities, border crossings, and highways from the Taliban.
According to him, the leaders of the “Taliban” intend to first cut the main roads on which the goods are delivered, and then launch an offensive on cities and districts.
