Forest fires in Turkey
The fire started on July 28 near the resort of Manavgat, according to preliminary data, due to severe heat in the region. According to CNN Turk, 62 people sought medical help.
In the afternoon of July 28, a forest fire spread to residential areas, local authorities said. The fire started in the nearby forest in four places against the background of 40-degree heat. The flames spread quickly through the strong wind. The fire affected residential buildings. Thick black smoke can be seen above the city. Residents of four city quarters were evacuated.
At least one plane, 19 helicopters, and more than 400 firefighters were involved in extinguishing the fire. Rescuers from other cities were also sent to Manavgat. Firefighters are trying to control the spread of the fire, local officials say.
Antalya Mayor Muhittin Bjoek said it was the biggest fire he had ever seen. He considers it suspicious that the fire broke out in four places at once. An investigation will be conducted into this. Dozens of people were injured in the fire.
