The Greek government has taken steps to increase the police presence in Mykonos and Ios, where concerns have been raised that local businesses are not following health measures to contain the pandemic.
It is noteworthy that 186 law enforcement officers were sent to the island of Mykonos, compared to 56 who were stationed there at this time last year.
Another 30 police officers, backed by the security and undercover agents, were sent to the island of Ios which is popular with young tourists attracted by bars, discos, and rock clubs.
Greek Deputy Civil Defense Minister Nikos Hardalias said that the islands of Mykonos and Yos are one step away from imposing additional quarantine restrictions and that the situation on the islands of Zakynthos, Tinos, Lefkada, Santorini, Paros, and Rhodes is also worrying.
As of the morning of July 31, a total of 198,034,753 cases of COVID-19 have been reported worldwide since the start of the pandemic. The number of deaths from this virus reached 4,224,421 people, and 178,930,551 people have already recovered from the disease.
