Fires in coniferous forests continue in several centers at once and have already led to many hours of train and car delays on the tracks.
The city of Pescara is particularly affected by the fire, where the fire broke out in Pineta Dannuntziana Park and the surrounding hills, the fire broke out at three different points. In some places, the fire approached residential buildings and forced people to flee from the beaches – sparks picked up by the wind brought the fire there as well.
In the evening, the mayor said that the fire was more or less under control, but the damage was huge.
“This part is a nature reserve – and it is completely destroyed. The damage to the environment is just incredible. It’s the heart of the city, it’s our green lungs – and now it’s gone,” he was quoted as saying.
Pescara’s prosecutor’s office opened a case to find out the reasons for the fire.
About 30 people and a restaurant were evacuated in Farindol municipality due to the fire. In the municipality of Orton on the Adriatic coast, a fire broke out in the city and forced the evacuation of several hundred people.
Fires continue in a number of places. The fire service has mobilized all its employees and equipment, but they can hardly cope with the load.
The Civil Protection Service wants to activate the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to provide assistance to the affected regions, in particular, to attract fire aircraft from other countries.
Greece and southern Turkey are also known to suffer from forest fires complicated by extreme heat and strong winds.
