“Iran will not hesitate to defend its security and national interests, and will respond quickly and forcefully to any risky steps,” Khatibzadeh said in a statement.
His statement came after London recalled its ambassador to Iran over an attack on a commercial ship off the coast of Oman.
The United Kingdom, as well as the United States and Israel, have accused Iran of involvement in a drone attack on a tanker that killed two people.
The incident, which damaged the Liberian-flagged Mercer Street tanker on July 27, was the first attack with human casualties on commercial shipping in the region, which high-ranking officials have clearly linked to rising tensions with Iran.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzade called “baseless” accusations of his country’s involvement in the attack.
