As part of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s “Big Construction” program, Ukrzaliznytsia has begun active work on electrification of the Kovel-Izov-State Border section. This will help strengthen Ukraine’s export position towards the EU.

“The Kovel-Izov-State Border section is crucial for the development of rail transport in the direction of the European Union. Electrification of this route will lay a solid foundation for increasing European transit traffic and economic development of our country,” he said.
Ukrzaliznytsia has already received permission to start major works from the State Architectural and Construction Inspectorate.
“Currently, active work is underway here. Next on the schedule is the selection of a contractor for the construction of the Kovel traction substation,” Yuryk said.
According to the UZ press service, electrification will increase the weight of freight trains on the site, increase their capacity and reduce the delivery time of goods. In addition, the introduction of electric traction in this section will also release 10 main locomotives, which will significantly reduce emissions of combustion products into the atmosphere (about 12 thousand tons/year) and reduce operating costs by UAH 136.4 million per year.
Currently, work is underway on the site to install catenary supports at the Ustyluh station, modernize rail circuits and lay cable networks at the Lubliniec-Volynskyi station.
During the first stage of works the reconstruction of the catenary, equipment of turnouts with electric heating systems, modernization of lighting of station necks and railway crossings, laying of cable networks, reconstruction of crossing alarm devices, loudspeaker notification and technological communication, installation of traffic lights, power supply panels, protective panels replacement of battery cabinets.
We will remind, earlier the deputy chairman of OP and the coordinator of “Big construction” Kirill Tymoshenko declared that in 2021 the big attention will be paid to the development of railway transport. In particular, an agreement has already been reached between Ukraine and France on the supply of 130 electric locomotives.
