A spokesman for the high-ranking Washington administration told the agency that the new policy “will build and maintain a strategic partnership that better reflects the values and interests of the United States.” According to him, within the framework of this policy, much more attention will be paid to the issue of human rights observance by the countries that will purchase weapons. According to the agency, the new rules will be officially announced in September.
“In some cases, additional conditions will be added to obtain approval,” said a source in the US Congress. At the same time, he said, the new policy could create difficulties in terms of the sale of weapons such as automatic small arms, which could be used by the police or irregular armed groups against the civilian population. At the same time, these changes can only slow down the sale of larger weapons systems, such as anti-aircraft missile systems or systems for the navy. However, such contracts are expected to eventually give the green light, the source said.
According to Reuters, the new rules will be a kind of departure from the policies of former US President Donald Trump, who in arms exports gave priority to the economic interests of American arms manufacturers.
