Thousands of people have fled their homes on the Greek island of Evia due to uncontrolled forest fires.

Fires on Evia, a large island east of the capital, quickly spread to several fronts, burning thousands of hectares of forest and forcing dozens of villages to be evacuated.
Greece has deployed an army to help fight the fires. France, Egypt, Switzerland, and Spain have sent aid, including fire planes. Ukraine has also sent firefighters to help Greece.
According to authorities, more than 570 firefighters are fighting the fire in Evia.
Since Tuesday, the Coast Guard has evacuated more than 2,000 people, including many elderly residents, from various parts of the island.
Forest fires broke out in many parts of the country during the week’s heat, the worst in three decades in Greece.
All over the country, forest lands were burned, dozens of houses and businesses were destroyed.
