The scandal around Maguchi and Lasickene
19-year-old athlete Yaroslava Maguchikh became the bronze medalist of the Olympics in Tokyo in the high jump on Saturday.
Later, photos appeared on the Internet showing a Ukrainian woman posing with Russian athlete Maria Lasickene immediately after the competition, the latter holding the flag of the Russian Olympic Committee.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine commented on Maguchykh’s embrace with the Russian woman. According to Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Hanna Malyar, athletes representing Ukraine at international competitions must understand that the Russian-Ukrainian war is ongoing, and this imposes certain restrictions and responsibilities.
The Deputy Defense Minister also confirmed that the bronze medalist of the Olympic Games in Tokyo Maguchi is indeed a junior lieutenant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Ukrainian national team included 60 army athletes.
