Fourteen Asian elephants of various sizes and ages walked across the Yuanjiang River in Yunnan Province on Sunday night, and now have a way to return to the reserve where they lived in Xishuangbanna-Dai Autonomous Prefecture.
Local authorities observed the herd during the elephant’s journey, involving trucks and drones. Some roads were even evacuated so that the elephants could walk and eat safely. Despite the fact that the elephants passed close to the capital of Yunnan Province, neither animals nor people were injured.
As of Sunday night, the elephants were still in Yuanjiang County, about 200 kilometers from the reserve.
The National Forestry and Pasture Administration said the animals were in a “suitable habitat” after crossing the river.
The provincial government has said it will continue to work to return elephants to their natural habitat in the near future.
A herd of elephants left the reserve more than a year ago for unknown reasons. They roamed more than 500 kilometers north. When they reached the outskirts of Kunming, a center of business and tourism, they returned to the south.
One elephant, which separated from the herd, was later calmed down and returned to the reserve.
Asian elephants are one of the most protected animals in China, and their population has recently grown to about 300.
