On Sunday, the island of Java erupted the most active and largest volcano in Indonesia – Merapi. No casualties were reported.

Mount Merapi has released clouds of hot ash at least seven times. Then lava flowed down its slopes. The sounds of the eruption were so loud that they could be heard for several kilometers. As a result of the volcanic eruption, smoke covered nearby villages and towns.
Authorities have urged residents living near Merapi to stay as far away from the crater mouth as possible, at least 5 km. No casualties were reported.
Merapi – the most active of the 120 volcanoes in Indonesia, its height – 2968 m. It is located on the island of Java, 30 km from the ancient city of Yogyakarta, with a population of over 400 thousand people.
The last major eruption of an Indonesian volcano with tragic consequences occurred in 2010. Hot ash was thrown 1,000 meters into the sky, and gas clouds passed through the 3-kilometer-long slopes several times. Then 347 people died.
Merapi volcano woke up in February 2020. The pillar of ash rose two kilometers. Volcanologists have announced a three-kilometer restricted area around the crater. There were no casualties.
