Ukrainian athletes at international competitions must “maintain a high level of responsibility for the country.” The language ombudsman Taras Kremin told about it on air of the program “Hard from Vlashchenko”, commenting on the scandal at the Olympic Games with the Ukrainian sportswoman Yaroslava Maguchikh who was photographed in an embrace with the Russian.

“As for sports diplomacy, on this topic, we met not only with athletes but also with the Minister of Youth and Sports Vadim Gutzayt. They said in what context – that during and participation in official briefings and press conferences, Ukrainian citizens are still obliged to use the state language and maintain a high level of responsibility for the country that sent them to the iconic competitions on a global scale. Our meeting with the Minister was declarative, ”Kremin said.
Asked whether he condemned the athlete’s actions, the language ombudsman replied:
“I watched the Greco-Roman struggle in 2008 between Russia and Georgia. When the Georgian defeated him, he did not shake his hand but was reminded that he did not support Russian aggression and would defend his people in a sporting way. The issue of subordination to its citizens is determined in particular by positioning the representatives of those countries that were represented at the competition. I do not share the principles of hugs, handshakes, and much more in the public sphere under the flag of Ukraine. “
At the same time, Kremin noted that the issues of sports diplomacy are very important.
“Nobody paid special attention to this issue, but in vain. Although I notice that at least the use of the state language by our athletes has a different quality. It is bad that the commissioner or someone else speaks about it, it is important that it was a matter of worldview and consciousness. Before Euro 2020, I met with the chairman of the Ukrainian Football Association, and we saw that most of the athletes began to speak Ukrainian better and more, ”he said.
Ukrainian track and field athlete Yaroslava Maguchykh won a bronze medal in the high jump at the −2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, overcoming a height of 2 meters.
OCR representative Maria Lasickene won the gold with a result of 2.04 meters. And the “silver” – Nicolas McDermott from Australia – 2.02 meters.
Later, the Ministry of Defense announced that they plan to hold a conversation with the winner of the 2020 Games Maguchykh. All because of a photo with a Russian woman after the final in Tokyo.
