Two lawmakers from the northern province of Samangan said the capital of Aybak province “fell” in front of the Taliban on Monday afternoon without resistance. According to them, government officials fled to another region. However, one lawmaker said some government facilities were still under government control as security forces resisted Taliban militants.
According to the head of the northern province of Sari-Pull, Muhammad Nura Rahmani, the Taliban seized the provincial capital after more than a week of resistance by Afghan security forces, after which the city of Sari-Pull “fell”. According to him, government forces have been completely withdrawn from the province.
Several pro-government commanders of local militias also surrendered to the Taliban without a fight, allowing the rebels to gain control of the entire province, Rahmani added.
The cities of Aybak and Sari-Poole join three other provincial capitals that are now fully controlled by the Taliban: Zaranj, the capital of the western province of Nimroz, the city of Shibirgan, the capital of the northern province of Jauzjan, and Talukan, the capital of another northern province.
The Taliban is also fighting for control of the city of Kunduz, the capital of the northern province of Kunduz. On Sunday, the Taliban hoisted their flag in the city’s main square.
The Taliban offensive across the country intensified as US and NATO troops began completing their withdrawal from Afghanistan this summer. In response to Taliban attacks, Afghan security forces and government forces responded with airstrikes with US support. The fighting also raises civilian casualties.
On Monday, UNICEF said it was shocked by the increase in child deaths amid escalating violence in Afghanistan. He said at least 27 children had been killed in various provinces in the past three days, including 20 in Kandahar.
