Kyiv. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – August 14, 2021 – Diplomatic Affairs
This opinion was expressed by former Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Valery Chaly on Channel 24 in the First-person program.
During his tenure at the Embassy and the President’s Office, Chaly participated in the preparation of approximately 70 visits. Based on his experience, the ex-ambassador gave some advice to Zelensky before his visit to the United States.
“The most important thing is to say why America needs Ukraine. This is a key position,” Chaly said.
Chaly added that “high tones” or the latest ways of communication in the White House will not work. It is important to prepare a presentation of Ukraine’s achievements, the vision of its development, and the situation in the region.
According to the ex-ambassador, it is also necessary to clearly indicate the probable areas of activity together with Joe Biden, Congress, and the United States in general. All these points should be written in the “agenda”.
The first meeting in the White House can also have a positive moment. Even the president will have few such opportunities, but we need to talk to Biden Zelensky.
“Joseph Biden is an extremely experienced politician. He is a profound expert in foreign policy and a man of wisdom,” Chaly said.
To understand the scale of the history of the United States and its leader, it is necessary to communicate with as many people around Biden as possible, with his advisers who will suggest something, with other trusted people. Then an understanding will be formed of what to talk about with the President of the United States.
Zelensky’s visit to the United States: expected results
Prior to Zelensky’s visit to Biden, the President’s Office released a “road map” with the expected results of the meeting. According to the ex-ambassador, the purpose of the document is to implement the strategic partnership between Ukraine and the United States.
“The issue of interaction with the United States, which is our key strategic partner, should be broader in the discussion than just inside some offices,” Chaly explained.
It should be noted that the “road map” contains specific proposals for cooperation between Ukraine and the United States for the next 2 years. They talk about security and defense, politics and diplomacy, energy, economics, etc. The document also addresses the issue of entry and exit of Ukrainians and Americans to partner countries. In addition, it raises the issue of the rule of law and domestic reforms that the United States is helping Ukraine with.
