People were killed in both the shootings and the stampede, a Taliban spokesman said on Thursday, urging people still crowded at the resort’s gates to go home if they did not have a legal right to leave.
“We do not want to harm anyone at the airport,” said a Taliban spokesman, who declined to give his name.
After an 11-day offensive on August 15, Taliban militants entered Kabul without a fight and established full control of the Afghan capital within hours. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has said he has resigned to prevent bloodshed and has left the country.
Commercial flights were stopped at Kabul airport. On August 16, the airport was in chaos due to the crowd of people wanting to leave the country. Due to the tense situation at the airport on August 16, the evacuation was temporarily suspended but later resumed.
Meanwhile, Western countries are evacuating their citizens and employees.
