Venice plans to charge visitors to the city and will set quotas for visits from summer 2022.
Kyiv. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – August 22, 2021 – Tourism and Travel
Venice, the Italian city, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
And visitors to the city will have to submit a prior request to enter it. Turnstiles will be installed at the main access points to the historic city center.
Measures to control the flow of tourists had been discussed for years before the pandemic.
Last month, Italy banned large cruise ships from the Venetian lagoon to protect the place from overtourism, which could be the first step in an effort to restore and regulate mass tourism.
Entrance to Venice can cost from 3 to 10 euros, depending on the season and the expected number of tourists.
Locals and tourists who have booked a room in a Venice hotel will be exempted from the fee.
This is still a controversial move to charge visitors.
City councilor Marco Gasparnetti added that Venice would be transformed into a theme park and suggested restricting access to particularly crowded places such as St Mark’s Square.
