A memorial plaque to Hennadiy Kernes was solemnly opened on the building of the Kharkiv City Council today. The ceremony was timed to the Day of Kharkov – as the acting mayor of the city Igor Terekhov said, it was symbolic for him to open a commemorative sign on this very date.

“This is the man who did the most important thing for Kharkiv: he managed to make Kharkiv residents fall in love with his city. He managed to make Kharkiv begin to develop at an incredible pace. It has become a dynamic city. They began to talk about Kharkov in a different way. The dynamics that Kernes instilled in the souls of Kharkiv residents live on today, ”Terekhov said.
The current head of the city also expressed his gratitude to Kernes for the team he had formed and declared his readiness to preserve both the dynamics of positive transformations of the city and the traditions laid down by the previous mayor of Kharkiv.
The memorial plaque depicts Kernes himself, as well as a number of memorable places in Kharkov: Gorky Park, Pobeda metro station, Nika monument, Strelka square. As the son of the previous mayor, Kirill Kernes, noted during the solemn procedure, “here are depicted the places in which Gennady Kernes put his efforts.”
Recall that Gennady Kernes was elected mayor of Kharkov three times and held this post from 2010 to 2020. He died on the night of December 16-17, 2020 at the German Charite clinic, where he was treated for complications from the coronavirus.
