“NATO is on Ukraine’s side and supports Ukraine. NATO never recognizes the illegal annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation. Crimea is the territory of Ukraine and we call on Russia to regain control of the Ukrainian peninsula. We call on Russia to stop violating the rights of all Ukrainians, including Crimean Tatars, “Joane said, adding that the Black Sea region and its security are important for NATO.
“We also reaffirm the decision of the Bucharest Summit that Ukraine and Georgia will become members of NATO,” Joane said.
The countries of the North Atlantic Alliance understand the political and practical significance of the Crimean Platform and support the position on non-recognition of the temporary occupation of Crimea and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.
Mircea Geoana stressed that the issue of NATO’s cooperation with Ukraine in cybersecurity is promising, and called national stability another important issue for cooperation between Ukraine, the Alliance, and the European Union.
The founding summit of the Crimean Platform took place on August 23 in Kyiv. It was attended by 46 representatives of foreign countries and international organizations.
As a result, the participants adopted a joint declaration, which for the first time at the international level recognized the Russian Federation as an occupying power. The declaration will now be processed item by item.
