As the politician said in an interview with TF1, “it’s a demanding and serious time.” According to him, “the world around us is a dangerous world.” “We see it at the moment in Kabul,” Barnier said. “In these difficult times, I made a decision. I am determined to nominate myself as President of the French Reconciliation, which will respect the French and will make them respect France. We live in a dangerous and unstable world. Our country is weakened, it is necessary to provide an alternative approach to reconcile people, unite them and start concerted action, “said the French politician.
In December 2020, Barnier had already officially announced his intention to return to French politics but has not yet backed up his words with concrete action. To lead the party of former French presidents Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy – formerly known as the “Union for a Presidential Majority”, then the “Union for a Popular Movement” and now renamed the “Republican” – as the main candidate in the spring 2022 elections, Barnier will first have to win the primary election of the center-right candidate.
