On Sunday, August 29, the third, Nut Savior, which is also called Bread and Savior on canvas, was celebrated. It was preceded by the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos (August 28) and the end of the two-week Dormition Fast.

Traditions. The holiday was established by the Orthodox Church in honor of the transfer from Edessa to Constantinople of the Image of Jesus Christ Not Made by Hands. Hence, his other names come from – Savior on canvas, Savior Not Made by Hands.
It received the name “Nut” among the people due to the fact that by this time-nuts were usually ripening, which our ancestors from ancient times considered a symbol of wealth and prosperity. Earlier on this day, it was customary to go to the forest for such gifts of nature, but always having a talisman with you.
What is customary to do. On the third Savior, nuts and bread of the new harvest are brought to the church, and the consecration of honey and other fruits is also not prohibited. For the holiday, the hostesses baked bread and pies with various fillings, in particular, with mushrooms. Dishes with nuts were served on the table, and since the Dormition Fast had already ended by this time, they prepared meat and fish.
It was customary to hold fairs on this day. It was necessary to go there and buy something – this was how the profit for the whole next year was pledged. The most valuable acquisition was considered a piece of fabric, linen. From the fabric purchased at Orekhovy Spas, they sewed clothes for babies so that they would be healthy.
They did not refuse to work either, because this is the time of the end of the harvest and preparation for winter. In addition, the hostesses made a tincture for colds, pouring moonshine into the membranes of walnuts.
Signs and traditions. On a holiday, food and help should not be denied to pilgrims and those who need it. It is forbidden to swear and swear.
Our ancestors said that with Bread Savior, summer was leaving, and the sun was turning for autumn. Swallows and cranes flying away to warm lands were considered a sign promising frost on the Pokrov. And thunder on this day foreshadowed warm autumn.
The girls wondered about the nuts for love and the future. If the plucked fruit was sweet and ripe, it promised great love. It was believed that a rotten nut – to trouble, and bitter – to discord in relationships.
