The university is making strides in international artificial intelligence research, education, entrepreneurship, and leadership. It also strives to include artificial intelligence in its other activities.
KAUST President Tony Chan said Schmidhuber’s appointment reflects the university’s and Saudi Arabia’s commitment to important artificial intelligence technology.
Schmidhuber has a Ph.D. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Technical University of Munich in Germany, and is a distinguished researcher, and is considered one of the world’s leading scientists in the field of artificial neural networks.
He is the co-founder and chief scientist at NNAISENSE, a company founded in 2014 to build large-scale neural network solutions for industrial process inspection, modeling, and control.
The new director, who has received a number of awards, recently directed the Swiss artificial intelligence laboratory, IDSIA, and was also a professor of artificial intelligence at the University of Lugano. Schmidhuber has authored over 350 peer-reviewed papers and is an advisor to many governments on AI strategies.
At KAUST, Schmidhuber is expected to recruit new faculty, develop educational programs and entrepreneurial activities. Furthermore, KAUST is likely to engage in collaboration with key public and private sector institutions in the country.
It is worth noting that deep learning neural networks, developed by the Schmidhuber lab, have revolutionized machine learning and artificial intelligence technology. By the mid-2010s, these circuits of neurons were being used by more than three billion devices around the world.
They were used, for example, to improve speech recognition in all Android smartphones and to improve the service for both Google Translators and Facebook.
They have also been used in Apple’s personal assistant, Siri, in the Quicktype app on all iPhones and many other apps.
In 2011, Schmidhuber’s team was the first to win official computer vision competitions with breakthrough deep learning neural networks. A year later, the team won a medical imaging competition for cancer detection.
