The surge in coronavirus mortality and hospitalizations in the United States has led some countries, including Bulgaria, Italy, the Netherlands, and Sweden, to introduce new restrictions, and the list could grow.
For example, Italy is introducing requirements for vaccinated travelers from the United States, who must now be tested for coronavirus in 72 hours, and unvaccinated tourists must undergo five days of self-isolation.
The Netherlands has declared mandatory self-isolation for vaccinated tourists from the United States, and unvaccinated tourists will not be allowed on the territory.
Last week, the European Union introduced a number of rules and restrictions for travelers, with EU member states taking various measures. However, the EU’s proposal to reintroduce restrictions for unvaccinated travelers from the United States is not binding, and many European governments have not yet responded.
It is noted that different activities in each EU country create confusion for tourists.
The publication reports that the answers to the questions about the requirements for tourists from the United States in a particular member state of the European Union can be found on the website of the relevant US embassy. Most of them, including France, Spain, and Germany, still welcome travelers from the United States without any problems.
But at the same time, any traveler from the United States is barred from entering Bulgaria “unless they are exempt,” according to the US Embassy in Sofia. These exemptions include visa students and EU citizens, as well as foreign officials or health professionals.
France, meanwhile, has no travel restrictions for American visitors, but to visit cultural institutions, restaurants, or bars, among other places, requires a “COVID certificate” based on testing or proof of vaccination.
On August 31, the European Union removed the United States from the list of “safe countries” for travel. The list also includes Israel, Kosovo, Lebanon, Montenegro, and Northern Macedonia.
The European Union has fully vaccinated 70% of the adult population.
At the same time, new outbreaks of Delta-coronavirus strain are being recorded in the EU. Thus, Bulgaria has one of the highest coronavirus mortality rates among the 27 EU countries, and it has faced a new, rapid increase in the number of COVID patients due to the more contagious Delta variant.
