The antitrust lawsuit was filed by Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite. The judge said that the plaintiff did not provide sufficient evidence that Apple illegally has monopoly rights in the digital gaming market. However, the judge concluded that the rules of use of the App Store, established by Apple, violate the laws of California on fair competition.
Apple said it was examining the possibility of an appeal. Katherine Adams, head of the corporation’s legal department, said that consumers who use the App Store will benefit by protecting the privacy of their personal information and that the App Store does not restrict innovation and competition, but promotes them.
Some experts interviewed by Reuters noted that Apple may face new lawsuits based on the court’s recognition that the company has acquired a status close to a monopoly.
The head of the U.S. Senate Legal Committee, Senator Amy Klobuchar, said the court’s verdict touched on only a number of issues of concern. In a statement, she said: “We need to pass a federal law on app stores to protect consumers, develop the competition, and support innovation.”
In the Senate and the US House of Representatives, lawmakers from both parties have drafted two bills regulating large app stores, which, among other things, stipulate that store owners do not oblige customers to use their payment systems.
