The UK government intends to repeal a number of relevant EU laws as part of major legal reform, with a waiver of Brexit commitments. This was stated by the Special Representative of Prime Minister Boris Johnson in talks with the EU on Brexit David Frost, speaking at the House of Lords on Thursday, September 16.

The process of Britain’s exit from the EU was officially completed in December 2020, but to ensure legal certainty, all British laws based on EU law remain in force. Their abolition could affect the already complicated relations between London and Brussels, according to AFP.
What laws are planned to change
For example, the government in London intends to abandon the “General Data Protection Regulation” (GDPR) adopted in 2016. British law will be “more appropriate and less complex,” Frost promised. However, EU regulation, which is considered the standard worldwide, is the basis of an agreement that allows British companies to share data with EU companies. New British regulation threatens local companies with the exception of the EU digital market.
According to Frost, London intends to “modernize outdated EU automotive standards.” This could lead to unpleasant consequences for the automotive industry, in which British manufacturers have traditionally worked with colleagues on the other side of the English Channel.
Another important sector is agriculture. Here, London wants to reconsider restrictions on imports and the use of genetically modified plants and animals, which could pave the way for new trade agreements with the United States and other countries. Other possible reforms include repealing an EU rule that restricts the use of the traditional Anglo-American measurement system, particularly for beverages.
Labor criticizes the government
The Labor Party has criticized the initiatives announced by Frost, calling them a failure. It would be preferable, according to the opposition, if the government addressed the current problems related to Brexit. Recently, for example, the mass migration of EU citizens has led to a shortage of truck drivers and significant logistics problems.
