The Group of Seven called on the Council of Judges and Partners of Ukraine to nominate experts to the High Council of Justice as soon as possible. This is stated in the message of the group following the meeting on judicial reform in Ukraine.
Kyiv. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – September 17, 2021 – Diplomatic Affairs
“G7 ambassadors are pleased to join today’s constructive dialogue with the government, parliament, and the judiciary on reforming the High Council of Justice, hosted by the Office of the President of Ukraine. The ambassadors heard from all parties, including a unanimous commitment to reform the GRP, ”the G7 ambassadors in Ukraine said in a statement.
“GRP reform is a historic opportunity to create the efficient and fair judiciary that Ukrainians demand and deserve. The ambassadors called on the Council of Judges and all Ukrainian partners to ensure the rapid nomination of experts to the GRP Ethics Council, ”the mission concluded.
Earlier, the United States called on Ukraine to save judicial reform by completing a set of expert panels to select candidates for members of the High Qualifications Commission of Judges (HQCJ).
In July, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine changed the procedure for electing GRP members and regulated the activities of GRP disciplinary inspectors, supporting the presidential bill? 5068.
On August 3, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed laws on GRP activities, including the establishment of an Ethics Council.
Zelensky was expected to start work on the ethics council of the High Council of Justice last week.
Moreover, international partners have already nominated leading forensic experts for selection and appointment to the council.
However, on September 13, it became known that the Council of Judges of Ukraine was unable to delegate three representatives to the Ethics Council.
Thus, in particular, 16 members of the RSU, ie the majority, did not support any of the nominated candidates. As a result, none of the candidates received enough votes.
In connection with the mentioned situation, a previously scheduled meeting with representatives of the judiciary and international partners took place in the Office of the President, convened after the Council of Judges was unable to delegate candidates to the Ethics Council of the High Council of Justice.
