Former Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has died at the age of 84, the presidency said on Friday, more than two years after he resigned under pressure from mass protests and the army.

Bouteflika, a veteran of Algeria’s war for independence, ruled the North African country for two decades before his resignation in April 2019 after street demonstrations that rejected his plan to run for a fifth term.
He was rarely seen in public before leaving after a 2013 stroke.
After Bouteflika’s resignation, in an attempt to quell protests demanding political and economic reforms, the authorities launched unprecedented investigations into corruption, which led to the imprisonment of several senior officials, including Bouteflika Said’s powerful brother and adviser.
Saeed was imprisoned for 15 years on charges, including conspiracy against the state.
Former Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio has died at the age of 82.
