White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the United States would ask participants to take on a “higher level of ambition” to provide vaccines more equitably and to obtain weapons, among other steps recommended to tackle the pandemic.
On Monday, Biden will travel to New York for his first trip to the presidency to attend the UN General Assembly, and on Tuesday he will address the assembled world leaders. He convenes a summit on the virus from the White House.
A senior administration official said Biden would call for action. The summit is not a conference with promises, “although we hope and expect that some partners will come ready to announce new efforts.”
Biden wants global leaders from the private sector, NGOs, philanthropists, and civil society leaders to help end the pandemic and prevent another, the official said.
Additional talks are expected on world leaders, including at the G20 summit in Rome in late October.
Biden will oblige all federal workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
