Large-scale forest fires in California, USA, have approached the famous Sequoia National Park. The largest trees in the world had to be saved from the fire, including General Sherman, the largest tree and the largest living organism in the world.
Kyiv. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – September 20, 2021 – Reports
Firefighters were worried that the flames could reach the Giant Forest in just a few hours. So the huge trees were wrapped in refractory aluminum blankets.
In general, rescuers wrapped a few large trees in a “blanket”. Among them was the largest in the world. A total of 350 rescuers, as well as helicopters and planes that sent water, were sent here to fight the fires.
This is a very important area for many people, so a lot of special efforts are made to protect this grove,
- said the representative of the park “Sequoia” Rebecca Patterson.
However, experts say that redwood trees are very fire-resistant – they evolved to survive in the fire.
Briefly about General Sherman
This is a specimen of the giant sequoia – one of the tallest species of trees in the world. General Sherman himself is the largest and heaviest tree and living organism in the world with the following parameters:
85 meters high,
1 910 tons of weight,
1,487 cubic meters of volume,
aged approximately 2,300 – 2,700 years.
With its height, General Sherman is less than 10 meters lower than the glorious Statue of Liberty. However, it is not the tallest tree in the world – only the largest in weight and volume.
By the way, the giant redwood was named after William Sherman – an American general who took part in the war against the Seminole Indians, as well as in the US Civil War on the side of the northern states – those who opposed slavery.
