“During a search and rescue operation, a group of climbers on Mount Elbrus managed to rescue 14 people, evacuated them to Azau meadow on snowmobiles, and handed them over to medics. Unfortunately, 5 people died,” the statement said.
It is noted that rescuers worked in difficult conditions. Gusts of wind reached 40-70 m / s, heavy precipitation in the form of wet snow. Air temperature up to -20° C. Visibility not more than 1 meter. The search was conducted at an altitude of 5,000 meters and above in the area of ??the group.
According to TASS, a group of 19 climbers, who was at an altitude of more than 5 thousand meters on Elbrus, called for help from rescuers on the evening of September 23. It was reported that it initially included 23 people, but four refused to climb. The climbers registered their route in advance with the Ministry of Emergencies of Russia.
The organizer of the climb Denis Alimov told TASS that the group was accompanied by four professional climbers, they did everything possible to help tourists.
