La Jornada clarifies that in July, Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso imposed a state of emergency in the country’s prison system. The decision came after several incidents of violence that killed more than 100 people. According to the publication, in February, 79 prisoners were killed during riots in three prisons in the country, which took place simultaneously.
However, on September 13, SNAI reported three explosions at Guayas Prison. The explosions damaged the roof of the prison, but no one was killed, the service said. According to the SNAI, the attack was aimed at the leaders of criminal gangs. “We are at the epicenter of the war between international cartels,” the service said.
