Kyiv. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – October 07, 2021 – Art and Celebrities
“Squid Game” was released on Netflix on September 17, 2021. Today, the project is confidently moving towards becoming the most popular non-English series in the history of streaming and may even move British or American competitors.
The plot of the series “Squid Game”
The South Korean film depicts a group of people desperate and burdened with debt who have agreed to take part in insanely dangerous survival games. In the pursuit of money, participants have to betray, deceive and show their most cruel sides. Only one can become the winner, the rest will die.
The story of the series
Screenwriter and director Gwang Don-hok, who was looking for a sponsor for the film for 12 years, took as a basis a popular game among schoolchildren called “Squid”. According to its rules, children are divided into two groups, which must fight for the right to occupy a plot that resembles a marine inhabitant.

Historical background
The “Squid Game” series addresses the themes of global social inequality, violence, and societal cruelty. Numerous historical upheavals: the Japanese colonization, the Korean War, the dictatorship of Park Jeong-hee, financial crises, left deep psychological scars. Stories of the terrible oppression of the poor and the glorification of the rich have always been popular not only in South Korea but throughout the world.
Cultural preconditions
“Squid Game” is based on the worldwide obsession with any gambling – from ordinary quizzes, answering questions, to reality like “The Last Hero”
Cinematic violence
Hollywood has long used these techniques. Scenes of violence, cruelty, and murder are typical of Western cinema. With their help, the creators of series and films are best able to evoke in viewers emotions of empathy, excitement, and anticipation.
Special aesthetics
Nevertheless, the series “Squid Game” is incredibly aesthetic, and the surrealism of the film is equated to Tim Burton’s film “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. Supervisors in pink overalls resemble Umpu-lump, and the participants’ dormitory is one of the rooms of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Of course, in the series “Squid Game” there are strong visual effects that keep you in suspense until the last minute.
Evolutionary models of information transfer
And finally – “Squid Game” would not have become so popular without social networks, including ticketing and Twitter. Today, there are dozens of memes online: about depression after 30, long-distance lollipops, from which participants cut out figures in one of the competitions, and so on.
