The world-famous artist Marina Abramovic presented in Babyn Yar the installation “Crystal Wailing Wall”, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the tragedy.

The Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial is a project that is needed now, in our time. The younger generation is losing touch with the memory of the past. The younger generation does not have the memories that my generation has. We need to think about a project that works with performative elements. I want the audience to interact. I want the audience to experience emotions. I want the younger generation to establish and reconnect with the past and see it, and experience not only the past but also the future, ”Abramovich said in a video commentary on the memorial’s website.
The Crystal Wailing Wall, which is 40 meters long and 3 meters high, has become one of the largest art objects in Europe built in the last decade.
Ukrainian anthracite coal and quartz crystals from Brazil were used to create the installation. At the same time, up to 40 people can be near the facility.
Presidents of Ukraine, Israel, and Germany Volodymyr Zelensky, Yitzhak Herzog, and Frank-Walter Steinmeier made speeches at the official opening ceremony on October 6.
The installation was commissioned by the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center, which is a private project.
Marina Abramovich was born in 1946 in Belgrade. The Serbian artist gained popularity thanks to the performances “The Artist is Present”, “Relationships in Space”. For his work “Energy of Peace” Abramovich received the “Golden Lion” at the 47th Venice Biennale in 1997. Member of the feminist art movement. In his works, he explores the relationship between the artist and the public, the boundaries of the body, and the possibilities of the mind.
