According to local Attorney General Rob Bont, his office is “ready to do whatever it takes to get a full report on how this happened.”
Local authorities are also investigating a damaged offshore pipeline that may have leaked oil near Huntington Beach and other coastal settlements in the south.
The Environmental Protection Agency said it had retrieved 74 oil-contaminated fish and birds from the ocean, killing 38 of them. In addition, 5,544 gallons of crude oil were extracted from the water.
Authorities said last week that the pipeline, which is operated by Amplify Energy Corp. from Houston, the damage was found. According to Jason Neubauer, chairman of the Coast Guard, a 13-inch section of the pipeline’s concrete shell was broken.
A large-scale oil spill occurred off the coast of Southern California last week. According to preliminary data, more than 500,000 liters of oil leaked from the offshore oil facility.
California Gov. Gavin News has declared a state of emergency in Orange County, ordering authorities to “take immediate and aggressive action to eliminate and mitigate” the spill.
