The United Kingdom, which is hosting the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change, or COP26, in Glasgow from 31 October to 12 November, is seeking the support of States for a more radical plan to combat climate change.
“It is now clear that Xi Jinping is not going to appear, and the prime minister has been informed,” an unidentified British source quoted the Times as saying. “We don’t know what position the Chinese will take.”
The Times said British organizers feared that Xi Jinping’s decision not to attend the conference could be a “prelude to China’s refusal to set new climate change goals in the face of the energy crisis.”
Chinese Special Representative for Climate Change Xie Zhenhua is expected to attend COP-26 from China.
The UN Conference on Climate Change will take place from October 31 to November 12 this year. Delegates from nearly 200 countries are expected to attend the event.
