“On the German-Polish border, we have already reinforced the border guard with eight hundred federal police officers. So there are currently hundreds of officers working there. If necessary, I am ready to go further,” the minister said.
He added that if the situation on the German-Polish border does not improve, it will be possible to consider strengthening public control in this direction, in the border area in coordination with Poland and the German state of Brandenburg. However, this decision will be taken by the next government (the current federal government of Germany will operate formally until October 26, until the first session of the Bundestag for a new session, after which new ministers have the status of acting ministers – Ed.
Seehofer also expressed his belief that the European Union has legal rights to protect its external borders. He noted that within the European Union, in principle, there should be no border controls, but this only works if the protection of the external borders is successful. Asked whether Europe should build walls around itself, the minister said, “Everyone who wants to enter the country must meet the requirements, and this must be checked.”
And the German Minister of the Interior warned of an increase in the flow of illegal immigrants to Germany from various sides, that the pressure of immigration on Germany and Europe in general is still high, and called for vigilance.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 6,162 unauthorized entries from Belarus through Poland have already been registered this year.
And last week, Germany extended its control over the German-Austrian border for another six months, as illegal immigrants have been entering the so-called Balkan route since 2015.
