Caramel candy, as in “Squid Game”

One of the most memorable scenes in the series was a test of sweets, where the characters had to cut out caramel figures.

These sweets – traditional for South Korea, were especially popular in the 80-90s, but they can be found on the streets of Seoul and other cities in the country and now. It is called caramel candy Dalgona (dalgona).

The game in which the characters tried to cut out figures from candy is called Ppopgi. Sometimes street vendors handed out prizes (such as toys) to children who cut the figure well.

You only need two ingredients to make candy: sugar and baking soda. It is best to use metal utensils with a thick bottom, wooden or silicone spatula. Non-stick cookware is also suitable.

Preparation:
Pour the sugar into a saucepan or skillet and put on low heat. Allow the sugar to melt completely and do not stir until this happens.

When the sugar turns amber, remove from the heat, add a pinch of baking soda and stir. The mixture should lighten a little.

Pour small portions of the mixture on parchment for baking (preferably siliconized) or silicone baking mat. Attach a metal cookie cutter to the caramel, you can also add a wooden stick at this stage to make it easier to eat the lollipop.

Allow the candy to cool for 15-20 minutes before removing from the mat.
