Our lives are inextricably linked to gadgets, with which we spend a lot of time, especially if they are needed at work. At the same time, we do not always follow the regime and rules of use. As a result – impaired vision.

Natalia Baskakova, an ophthalmologist at the Medibor Clinic in Zhytomyr, spoke in more detail about why computer-visual syndrome occurs and how to mitigate its effects.
What are the symptoms of computer-visual syndrome
It is estimated that during the year we spend an average of 3.5 months “communicating” with gadgets. At the same time, every sixth person in the world has vision problems. In 1998, the American Optometric Association introduced a new term: “computer-visual syndrome.” It includes a range of eye and visual symptoms that are associated with computer work. People complain of vision impairment, blurring, difficulty in shifting the gaze from near to far and vice versa, diplopia, tingling, excessive light sensitivity, decreased visual performance. There may also be pain in the eye area and in the superciliary areas, a feeling of sand in the eyes, tearing, dryness and tearing in the eyes.
What causes the syndrome
All these symptoms occur due to violation of the rules of working with gadgets. First of all, you need to make sure that there is good lighting. It is advisable to use yellow incandescent lamps (unfortunately, they are no longer used), because white artificial lighting has a worse effect on vision. The fact is that the eye perceives softer light yellow tones better than white light, which has a bad effect on the retina. In the evening, the room must have overhead lighting, as well as separate lighting on the table where the computer is located. It is necessary to keep the optimal distance from the eyes to the monitor and make sure that the monitor is not too bright.
The screen should not be exposed to light – this will cause eye strain and discomfort, so you can not work at the computer in front of the window with the curtains open. Frequently wipe the monitor with dust, which prevents you from seeing a clear image.
We usually blink every 5 seconds, ie 11,000 times a day. But when we immerse ourselves in computer work, we start blinking five times less, because our eyes are very tense. Subsequently, there is a feeling of dry eyes and discomfort.
Another reason for the development of computer-visual syndrome is the qualitative difference between the image on the monitor and paper. Even in the most modern monitors there are certain flickers and micro-changes to which the eyes are very sensitive, which is not in the book, where the image is fixed.
What else can affect the development of the syndrome
Diseases such as arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, thyroid disease, menopause, and medication (including antihistamines, antidepressants, diuretics, and other medications) may indirectly contribute to the development of computer-visual syndrome.
What are the chances of getting myopia
If you constantly sit at the computer, ignoring the rules and regulations, you can “earn” not only unpleasant sensations in the eyes, but also significantly impair vision. The fact is that when we look at any object (monitor screen, phone, wall, book) at close range for a long time without following the rules of the regime, our eye muscles work only at close range, and then m ‘ their tongues become lazy, atrophy and no longer want to work long distances. As a result, myopia develops.
How to properly organize the mode of operation
There is a so-called “rule of three twenties”: we work at the computer for 20 minutes, then close our eyes for 20 seconds, then get up and take 20 steps around the room. It is very important at this point to look out the window at the farthest point – for example, on the roof of a distant house or the top of a tree, so that the eye muscles work at a distance. After such a short break, you can resume working on your computer.
It is useful to use computer and corrective glasses with special protection. It is advisable to refrain from soft contact lenses because they slow down the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the eye. In addition, the blinking frequency decreases.
It is important to remember that a variety of painful symptoms related to the eyes and eyesight appear due to improper organization of work on the computer, but this “bouquet” of sensations should disappear as soon as you stop your work. But if you violate the regime and rights
If you have been working for many years, you will get not only myopia, but also other serious vision problems.
Therefore, you need to pay attention to your condition: if you have experienced at least a few symptoms of computer-visual syndrome, then you need to seriously reconsider your work schedule and workplace organization and correct mistakes before it’s too late.
In any case, it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist, who will clarify the situation, identify the cause of your problems and, if necessary, prescribe special means for vision correction.
