Kyiv.Ukraine.Ukraine Gate – November 7,2021- Ukrainian boxer Yuri Zakharev has become the youngest world boxing champion in the history of Ukraine.
Zakharyev won the gold medal at the age of 19. To date, the youngest champion was Vasyl Lomachenko who won the world championship (2009) at the age of 21.
For Zakharev, it was his first world championship among adults. He previously won the World Youth Championship.
Zakharyev’s victory became the seventh in the history of boxing in Ukraine. Previously, the world champions were among the amateurs: Vasyl Lomachenko (2009, 2011), Oleksandr Usyk (2011), Taras Shelestyuk (2011), Levin Khitrov (2011), Oleksandr Khzhnyak (2017).
Yuri Zakhariev also won the “gold” world championship, which ended in Belgrade (Serbia). In the last round in the weight category up to 71 kg, the Ukrainian defeated Russia’s Vadim Musaev by a unanimous decision of the judges.
