Representatives of the Tigers, an Ethiopian ethnic group, were reportedly arrested by UN staff.
UN spokesman Stefan Dujarric declined to answer questions about the ethnicity of the detainees and said: “These are United Nations staff, they are Ethiopians … And we would like them to be released, regardless of the ethnicity indicated on their IDs.”
The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission is said to have received many reports of arrests of tigers in Addis Ababa, including the elderly and mothers with children.
Law enforcement officials denied the ethnically motivated arrests and said they were aimed only at supporters of the rebel tiger forces fighting the government.
At the same time, the representative of the Ethiopian government Legesse Tulu stated that there was no information about the arrests of UN staff. According to him, “Ethiopians who break the law” were detained.
In the spring of 2021, Ethiopian authorities announced that Eritrea was withdrawing troops from the Tigris, and within months the rebels had taken over the region’s administrative center, the city of Mekele.
In August, the UN secretary general declared a humanitarian catastrophe in the country. According to him, at least 400,000 people in Ethiopia live in famine.
On November 2, Ethiopia declared a state of emergency. Tiger forces may move to the capital due to the rapid escalation of war in the region.
