A child’s skull found in a remote part of South Africa’s cave system has led to suspicion that an ancient hominid known as Homo naledi hid its dead in caves.
An international team led by paleoanthropologist Lee Berger of the University of the Witwatersrand collected 28 skull fragments and six teeth from a child’s skull found in a narrow hole about 12 meters from the underground chamber where cave explorers first discovered Homo naledi fossils. The characteristics of the child’s skull allow us to classify it as Homo naledi, a species with a brain the size of an orange and the characteristics of the skeleton of both modern humans and other species of Homo aged about 2 million years.
“We seem to be talking about the deliberate ritual burial of a body in the Homo naledi caves,” Berger told a news conference on November 4 in Johannesburg. Although this argument is debatable, there is no evidence that the child’s skull could have been washed into a tiny space or moved there by predators.
Let’s add
The skeleton of Homo naledi is characterized by a small skull and combines both primitive and advanced features. According to experts, these hominids are closer to Australopithecus than to ancient humans.
