The bill has been criticized by both unions, which want even more transparency, and the largest employers’ organization, which says it will cause more conflict in the workplace.
In response to criticism, Finnish Equality Minister Thomas Blumquist said the main purpose of the law was to close the unjustified pay gap between workers.
Katya Leppanen, a lawyer with the Confederation of Finnish Industry, said that companies should provide income information on a voluntary basis. According to her, “the publication of such information will lead to unnecessary curiosity and deterioration of the working atmosphere.”
According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, in 2020 Finnish women earned 17.2% less than men. This year, Finland ranked 37th in the ranking of gender equality in wages.
The law is going to be adopted in April 2023.
