Two varieties of potatoes for dietary nutrition and immunity were bred at the Institute of Potato Growing of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine – “Solokha”, with blue-violet color of the flesh, and “Khortytsya” – with red. Mykola Furdyha, director of the Institute, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, told .
According to the scientist, “Solos” and “Khortytsya” contain vitamin C, as in Bulgarian pepper (№2 in the world in terms of this vitamin content after rose hips) and broccoli. Mykola Furdyha also explained why the tuber has such unusual colors.لدرنة بألوان غير عادية.
“It’s due to some wild varieties of potatoes, which have a similar color of flesh. They grow in Chile, Peru, Bolivia, they are not eaten – they are actually weeds. But these species are very resistant to pests and diseases. We used their genes in the selection process to increase immunity, resilience (our institute, by the way, owns a genetic potato potato with 3016 different specimens), so these colors appeared, “said the scientist.
In addition, Mykola Furdyha assured that during the breeding of new varieties did not use genetic modification, they were created by classical methods of selection.
