If you are at high risk of diabetes, you need to think not only about sugar in food, but also about other foods. In particular, it is a question of milk and products from it .
Researchers have found that dairy products can increase the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes in those at particular risk, while reducing it. Observations of 639 men and women have shown that the right choice of dairy products is crucial. The researchers tracked how many of these patients with prediabetes later developed type 2 diabetes. The follow-up period was 9 years, and during this period, 25% of study participants experienced diabetes.
The study authors compared the results of those who increased their consumption of dairy products and those who continued to consume them in the usual amount. It turned out that in the first case, when the amount of dairy products increased by more than half a serving per day, the risk of developing diabetes decreased. However, to achieve this it was necessary to rely on low-fat dairy products. They reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Those who increased their consumption of skim milk and yogurt had a 43% lower risk of diabetes than those who continued to consume regular dairy products. Also, increasing the amount of low-fat yogurt in the diet and reducing portions of high-fat yogurt reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 27%. People with prediabetes should limit the consumption of cheese, especially fatty. When it was replaced with low-fat yogurt, the risk of developing diabetes was reduced by 47%.
