The researchers found that the least prone to cardiovascular disease are those who go to bed at 22: 00-23: 00 .
To reach this conclusion, a team from the University of Exeter (Britain) conducted a large study. More than 88,000 volunteers took part in it. Their age was 43-79 years.
Scientists have assumed that the functioning of our body is subject to the so-called circadian rhythms. As lead author David Plans put it, the “24-hour internal clock.”
Those who go to bed earlier or later than ten or eleven o’clock in the evening are most likely to break this biological clock – with further negative consequences for heart health.
To prove the link between the biological clock and the risk of cardiovascular disease, the team studied data on the daily routine of volunteers.
For about six years, researchers used accelerometers to collect data on going to sleep and waking volunteers. During the study period, cardiovascular disease developed in more than 3,000 participants. Most of them went to bed later or earlier than the optimal time between 22:00 and 23:00.
Analyzing the results of observations, the team took into account other important factors that can damage the heart, provoke heart attacks and strokes. Including blood pressure, age, weight, bad habits, blood cholesterol.
It turned out that the greatest risk to heart health are those who go to bed after midnight. In this case, the probability of heart attacks and strokes increases by 25 percent.
A large-scale study has shown that going to bed at the time specified by scientists can help most people keep their heart healthy for many years.
