It is reported that in order to prevent the import of wild poliovirus (hereinafter – STI) and to detect the circulation of vaccine-related poliovirus (hereinafter – STIs), an epidemiological surveillance of acute flaccid paralysis (hereinafter – GWP) is carried out.
As of November 11, 2021, VSPV2 (VDPV2) in twenty children (clinical manifestations in children are currently absent) and paralysis in a 17-month-old girl caused by VSPV type 2 (VDPV2) were determined in Ukraine. A total of twenty children aged 1 to 14 years. They are not vaccinated against polio, ”the request said.
The CHC reported that a child with paralysis in the Zakarpattia region was found within the framework of the GWP surveillance and examined in accordance with the regulations.
“The obtained isolates isolated during the study of biomaterial samples from a sick child in the National Reference Laboratory of Virological Research of the Center were sent to the Regional Reference Laboratory of the World Health Organization (Finland) in Finland. From October 1, the presence of poliovirus type 1 was confirmed in the selected samples. An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the child’s GWP. The girl was not vaccinated against polio, ”the response to the request reads.
In addition, in the Zakarpattia region, VSPV type 2 (VDPV2) was detected in four children. Another children aged two, four and five. It is noted that children are not vaccinated against polio.
Addition
In Ukraine, a case of paralysis was recorded and confirmed in a 1.5-year-old child from Rivne region. The disease is caused by a derivative of the vaccine strain of polioviruses type 2 (Sabin 2). The parents deliberately refused medical vaccinations because of their religious beliefs.
Later, the Ministry of Health reported that additional rounds of immunization of children against polio were scheduled in Rivne oblast, and unvaccinated children were not allowed to study.
“The level of immunization of children with polio is insufficient. Only 53% of children under the age of one received routine vaccinations in 2021. Given the case of polio, we now have to make an additional tour and vaccinate all children in the region to protect children from infection. In addition, we have results from the WHO, which identify it as an outbreak, and the virus is associated with viruses of Afghan-Pakistani origin, which are now circulating in Tajikistan, “- said then Deputy Minister of Health – Chief State Sanitary Igor Kuzin .
It is stated that at such rates of vaccination (53%) “by the end of the year without additional measures to achieve the required level of collective immunity of 95% will not succeed.”
For reference
Polio is an acute infectious disease. The poliovirus spreads from person to person through feces and saliva, most often through dirty hands, infected food and water. Every unvaccinated child and adult can get polio. But children under the age of five are most susceptible to the polio virus. Therefore, children receive the first vaccination in the first months of life.
