Kyiv،Ukraine،Ukraine Gate – November 18,2021- Independent doctors stated that Saakashvili is in critical condition and called for him to be urgently transferred to a private clinic.
This was also stated in the conclusion of a multifunctional group of doctors created on the initiative of the People’s Defender of Georgia.
On the evening of November 16, a group of doctors visited Saakashvili in the prison hospital on behalf of the Defender of the People. They examined the former president on hunger strike for the forty-ninth consecutive day and inspected the prison hospital equipment, and a statement issued less than a day later said that Saakashvili was already starving and in critical condition.
Saakashvili was diagnosed with Wernicke’s encephalopathy, progressive hypokalemia, anemia, thalassemia, and the likelihood of gastric bleeding.
In addition, it is noted in the conclusion that Saakashvili’s condition is deteriorating due to the refusal of full treatment and increased stress. Doctors believe that in the near future all diagnoses may end in exacerbation – status epilepticus or coma, gastric bleeding, lethal arrhythmia, renal failure, rhabdomyolysis, pulmonary embolism and heart failure. In addition, experts say, in the case of cessation of starvation there is a high probability of developing refiding syndrome.
As for the hospital itself at the № 18 prison in the Gldan district of Tbilisi, according to doctors, the institution is in the process of formation, the hospital has only part of the medical equipment, and there are no necessary specialists on site.
“If the patient’s condition worsens, it will create problems, because the group of doctors who are constantly on site is not enough. Wernicke’s encephalopathy was not diagnosed due to the absence of a neurologist, the possibility of gastric bleeding was not studied, the need for constant cardiac telemetry on the background of hypokalemia was not considered, ”the conclusion reads.
Experts also found that if Saakashvili’s condition worsens, the resuscitation team on duty will not be able to provide the necessary assistance and the patient will have to be transported to another clinic.
“Based on the critical condition of the patient, his treatment is immediately recommended in a functional polyprofile hospital with extensive experience, in particular in the intensive care unit, which is not in the prison № 18”, – said in conclusion.
It is also reported that the staff of the People’s Defender of Georgia has officially appealed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) to include a third party in the precautionary measure in the Saakashvili case.
Through the ECtHR, lawyers are seeking a transfer to Saakashvili’s civilian clinic, which has been on hunger strike for 49 days . In response to the lawsuit, the Strasbourg court previously called on the Georgian authorities to ensure the security of the politician in prison and provide him with the necessary treatment. At the same time, the Georgian ex-president was called to end the hunger strike. Saakashvili promised to start eating immediately after being transferred to a private clinic, which will be selected by a council of doctors.
The People’s Defender reportedly set up an independent group of medical experts on November 16, after it became clear that the Ministry of Justice did not consider it appropriate to send a previously appointed council to Saakashvili, citing the fact that he was already in hospital.
