The Lebanese ministry also noted that a large number of citizens had recently flown from Beirut to Belarus, intending to enter the EU with the help of smugglers. At the same time, they are difficult to distinguish from air passengers, the ultimate goal of which is Belarus itself, so the new restrictions take effect immediately and are valid indefinitely, it is noted below. The new rules must be followed by all airlines departing from Beirut airport.
The conflict between Belarus and the EU
In the near future, the EU intends to adopt a fifth package of sanctions against Belarus, which will respond to the “hybrid attack” of Alexander Lukashenko’s regime, which uses migrants as a tool to achieve its goals. They are expected to include measures for 30 airlines, travel agencies and officials who support the Belarusian regime in smuggling migrants.
Context
The situation on the Polish-Belarusian border sharply worsened on November 8, when several thousand migrants from Belarus approached it, wanting to move to the European Union. Border guards and servicemen managed to stop them, they set up camp near the village of Kuznytsia. In the following days, groups of migrants repeatedly tried to break through barriers at the border, including with the use of light and noise grenades.
In May, the ruler of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, stated that Minsk would no longer keep refugees from continuing to the EU. After that, the flow of illegal migrants sharply increased, first to Lithuania and then to Poland. The European Union accuses Lukashenko of deliberately provoking the conflict and organizing the deportation of thousands of people to the EU’s borders in response to sanctions against his regime.
